What is UNISON doing?

Campaigning to see off the BNP

UNISON is marching into spring in a major campaign to turn back the British National Party at the polls.

In the run-up to May's council elections in England and Wales, UNISON is encouraging people to vote as the surest way of seeing off the far-right organisation and stop it spreading its politics of hate.

Last year, we played a key part in preventing a BNP breakthrough. It proves that local action works. However, there is no room for complacency.

The BNP currently enjoys the highest levels of support for a fascist party in British history. Doing nothing is not an option.

UNISON branches and regions are working alongside other trade unions, local political parties and community groups to prevent the BNP making any electoral gains this year.

Members are taking part in the Anti-Fascist Fortnight, between 30 March and 15 April, to demonstrate their opposition to the BNP.

Because the threat is often in traditional Labour areas, UNISON is also working closely with local Labour party branches. Despite our differences with the government on some issues, keeping the BNP out is something we all need to pull together on.

We have produced a variety of leaflets and posters for members to use to promote the 'Stop the BNP' message, created this website, and, through our general political fund, helped to publish a tabloid paper being distributed throughout London, which is a key battleground in this year's elections.

UNISON is also supporting the Hope not Hate bus tour. In the two weeks immediately before the elections, the bus will journey to towns and cities where the BNP poses a key threat to pay tribute to the different regional, racial and religious elements that make Britain great.
