The national Further Education Committee will meet on Wednesday 2 July to consider what recommendation to put behind the Association of Colleges pay offer. The offer is:
3.2% increase on all salaries and allowances, or the sum of £550 – whichever is greater, in the form of an underpinning for lower paid staff from 1 October 2008.
The 3.2% will be paid for 10 months from 1 October, so taken over 12 months from 1 August it is worth 2.7% in cash terms. However, the pay scales will increase by 3.2%, which is beneficial for both the purposes of calculating your pension and next year’s pay rise.
The £550 underpinning means that everyone below scale point 15 (£17 469) on the harmonised pay spine will receive a larger increase than the recommended 3.2% from 1 October. It also means that the minimum hourly rate of pay will increase by 4.32% to £6.91 per hour.
This offer falls far short of UNISONs claim for 6% or £1500 - Since 2004 fuel, food and lighting costs have gone up by 50%. The average combined household bill for electricity and gas is estimated to be more than £1,000 a year.
Despite this, some colleges have even failed to implement the recommended the national pay rise.
