UNISON withdraws funds from RISE festival

National Delegate Conference has agreed to withdraw UNISON's financial support from the GLA-organised RISE festival, in protest at Boris Johnson's decision to drop the festival's anti-racist message.

RISE was originally established by the TUC, as a dedication to the memory of Stephen Lawrence and other black citizens who have suffered from racism. It has since become the largest anti-racist festival in Europe.

Rise London United festival 2008 – Sunday 13 July, Finsbury Park

You will probably know that the London Mayor’s Rise festival was an initiative of the TUC in 1996, soon after the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence. Since that time we have strongly supported this anti racist anti fascist music day and last year worked with the Mayor’s office to create “UnionCity” – a trade union centred area in the heart of the event.

We have now had confirmation that Rise will continue with themes of:
  • celebrating London’s diversity
  • highlighting the cultural, artistic, sporting, social and economic contribution of London’s BAME communities
  • raising the issue of anti-racism and celebrating London as a multicultural city

UnionCity is our opportunity to put trade unions at the heart of that agenda.
