Pay Matters: Local Government Strike

What can I do?

The July strike may be over but we are still fighting for a fair deal for local government workers, and there are still things you can do to help us win wide support.

Your help is crucial to raise public awareness of the contribution UNISON members make to local communities and the pressures they face.

Act now to make the pay campaign a success

Stay informed

  • Keep a close eye on the website for the latest news and information.
  • Read about the pay campaign in In Focus
  • Attend union branch and workplace meetings called by UNISON.

Spread the word: It's a pay cut and we want to talk to the employers again

  • Have your say on news websites and talkback radio - help people understand why we are prepared to take sustained and escalating strike action.
  • Support the action online - send us your messages and photos, and share the videos at UNISONTV.
  • Volunteer to be interviewed and quoted by the press and media.
  • If you do not work in local government, have a discussion in your branch about how you can show support for your striking colleagues.
  • Write to your MP. You can find out who your MP is and contact them directly through the website theyworkforyou.com
  • Send a letter to your local paper.

Recruit new members. The bigger our union is, the stronger we are

  • You don't have to be a steward to encourage someone to join. Tell a colleague about the benefits of joining UNISON today.
  • Make it a priority to talk to people about the pay campaign and joining UNISON.
  • Always carry a recruitment leaflet with you.
