LGBT Newsletter - April 2009
Happy 10th birthday national minimum wage!
The national minimum wage is now 10 years old. It's a major achievement, raising the living standards of the lowest paid and helping close the gap between men and women's pay. To celebrate the day, we're asking UNISON members to contact their MP and the Low Pay Commission, to make it work even better. More at http://www.minimumwage.org.uk
Want to be an 'Out in UNISON' star?
We're looking for LGBT members to profile in our hard copy newsletter 'Out in UNISON'. We want to show the breadth of members and what makes them tick. If you're willing to answer a few questions by email, including why you're a union member and what union activities you're involved in, and send us a photo for publication, please email us at out@unison.co.uk
Taking action against the BNP
Elections to the European Parliament take place on 4 June. UNISON is urging everyone to make sure they are registered to vote and to use their vote. Low turn-out will increase the BNP's chances of winning a seat. The BNP is a racist and homophobic party. Winning just one seat would give them access to public money and a platform to spread their message of hate. Encourage everyone you know to register - deadline 17 May. Details - including registration forms - at http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk
New UNISON LGBT recruitment materials
We have redesigned our LGBT recruitment materials for the fast-approaching pride season. You will be able to see the new images in the next couple of weeks on our website http://www.unison.org.uk/out and in the Spring issue of Out in UNISON, which will be out at the end of this month. We've gone for fewer words to make leaflets quicker and easier to read. We hope you'll take them to community venues far and wide. Union recruitment's not just for pride days!
S.O. - a practical guide for the NHS
New practical advice from the Department of Health to enable NHS organisations to address their workplace and healthcare delivery responsibilities. Read it at http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publicationsandstatistics/Publications/PublicationsPolicyAndGuidance/DH_095634
Age of Diversity
Polari, the organisation which has campaigned for the last 15 years for more inclusive services for older LGBT people, has now retired. Its work will be carried on by other organisations and Polari has announced that its director, Lindsay River, is working with other older LGBT people to launch a new, user-led organisation - Age of Diversity. More to follow, but for now you can contact them at ageofdiversity@googlemail.com
US signs UN declaration
The US has announced support for the UN Statement on Human Rights, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity that was presented in the United Nations last December. The statement is supported by all 27 EU member states but there is a long way to go before all 192 UN member countries sign up. US support shows a sea change in their attitude, unthinkable under President Bush.
