Time to come clean on abuses in cleaning industry

Widespread abuses in the cleaning industry are to come under the spotlight with the setting up of a new taskforce by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission.

Commenting on the move, UNISON General Secretary, Dave Prentis, said:

“UNISON is looking forward to the opportunity of working with the Equalities and Human Rights Commission to tackle some of the widespread abuses in the cleaning industry.

“The evidence from cleaners shows that this task force will have its work cut out. Low pay, heavy work and poor treatment are the shameful hallmarks of this important sector. Cleaners have suffered hugely from the worst aspects of outsourcing and the race to the bottom to find cheap labour to do some of the most vital jobs in our community.

“Shining a light on this work and the appalling abuses of this often invisible workforce, is a vital step towards better practices and fairer pay across the entire cleaning industry.”
