UNISON welcomes more rights for surrogate parents

(15/11/12) UNISON has welcomed the government's announcement that surrogate parents who meet the criteria to apply for a parental order will be eligible for statutory adoption pay and leave and flexible parental leave, providing they meet the qualifying conditions.

UNISON legal officer Kate Ewing said: "The union believes that this is an important step forward for parents' rights.

"We look forward to seeing the detail which we hope will close the gap in protection identified by the UNISON backed leading case of CD v ST currently awaiting hearing in the Court of Justice of the European Union."
