UNISON demands apology over NHS Wales claims

UNISON Cymru/Wales has called on the Prime Minister and health minister Jeremy Hunt to apologise to the NHS workforce in Wales, after a Nuffield Trust report showed that there is no evidence for the claim that health services in Wales are failing to keep pace with any other part of the UK.

Head of health Dawn Bowden said: ”UNISON Cymru/Wales welcomes the report of the Nuffield Trust and this important evidence about the state of the NHS in all nations across the UK.

“Everyone knows there are major demands to be met in health care in Wales and this union firmly believes that it is hard evidence, not prejudice, which must underpin and inform our decisions.

“Based on the evidence in this important report, David Cameron should apologise for the way he has denigrated the efforts of NHS staff in Wales.

“For their hard work – often beyond the call of duty – they have faced a political attack which has undermined their professionalism and dedicated service.

And Ms Bowden added: “It is now absolutely clear that this was a purely political attack based on no real evidence.

“They may have got a few short-term headlines, but this report puts the lie to it. No one will trust a word David Cameron says about the Welsh NHS in future.

“UNISON will continue to have an open and honest dialogue with the Welsh government about the health challenges facing our country, and we hope that the Prime Minister and health minister might learn a few lessons about the way we are making progress in the NHS in Wales.”
