Young Members

Young workers are often under-represented within the trade union movement although without us trade unions could cease to exist in as little as 30 years. That's why our priority is to recruit and support more young members and encourage them to become active.

UNISON Greater London region has over 5,000 members who are under 27.

Andwhat are we doing?
Greater London Region has an active Young Members Forum which holds monthly meetings to plan activities and discuss issues affecting young workers across Greater London.

We are currently running the following campaigns:

  • Film Training – A course for Young Members who are interested in developing their film production skills while creating a short film for the TUC 60 Second Ad Contest
  • UpRise Anti-Racism Festival – Working with the organisers of a music festival.  Giving Young Members the opportunity to help with the running of the event, support fundraising projects and mentor young people.
  • A Young Members Officer in Every Branch – Encouraging every UNISON branch in the region to have a Young Members Officer in post.

Young Members play an active role within the region and have representatives on the Regional Black Members' Committee, and both the Regional Committee and Regional Council.

Join us on Facebook to keep up-to-date with everything we are doing and to get involved.

How does this fit into the wider UNISON framework?

Branch Level
All UNISON members are allocated to a specific branch depending on their place of work and job role.  Each branch should have a Young Members Officer who advises and helps recruit young workers in the branch and is a good point of call for further information about your UNISON branch.  You may wish to become active in your branch; current Young Members across the Greater London region hold positions including:

National Level
UNISON's National Young Members Forum - often referred to as NYMF - is made up of two representatives from each region, plus the Young Members representative on UNISON's National Executive Committee (NEC).

The NYMF looks at issues affecting young members in UNISON, and how to go about improving recruitment and organisation of young members. The NYMF makes sure young members concerns are raised at the highest level and in all parts of the union.

There is an annual Young Members' Weekend where you can meet Young Members from across the country, share ideas, learn from each other's experiences and even have some fun!

Find out more: email Jamie Brown, London Young Members Forum Secretary or call 020 7535 6655.
