Registration Officers

Local Authority Registration Officers register Births, Deaths, Marriages, and carry out many other duties. After many years of campaigning by UNISON and others, the Statistics and Registration Service Act made them Local Authority employees from 1st December 2007. Previously they were statutory officers with no employment rights. UNISON actively supports our members in the Registration Service and:
  • Campaigned with the Society of Registration Officers (SORO) and Dr Brian Iddon MP for legislation to introduce employment status
  • Negotiated an national implementation agreement covering key issues for members
  • Worked with SORO, Local Government Employers, LACORS and the General Register Office to ensure a smooth transition to employment status
  • Held a series of successful regional seminars for UNISON members and activists in the registration service.
We are continuing to support members in the registration service through service reorganisation and as new registration schemes are introduced.
