What is LAOS?

UNISON routes to learning for representatives and members
UNISON Learning and Organising Services (LAOS) co-ordinates trade union education and lifelong learning opportunities for members. This includes training and development for union reps as well as personal and career development courses ranging from Skills for Life through to professional qualifications. We also offer learning discounts and a small educational grants scheme.

Northern College: Access to Higher Education Diploma in Labour Studies

Northern College offers some free places for UNISON members on the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Labour Studies and you can also apply for a UNISON for a Trade Union and Labour Studies Bursary to help with course costs.

Revised scheme for the accreditation and training of stewards

The revised scheme for the Accreditation and Training of UNISON Stewards and Workplace Reps has now been approved by the NEC Development Organisation Committee.

2009 National Survey of the UNISON/WEA Lifelong Learning Programme

This report presents the findings of a survey of over 600 students who had completed Return to Learn: Women’s Lives courses between 2005 and 2008. The researchers concluded that “UNISON/WEA course are well placed to meet the learning needs of participants, the majority of whom report positive impacts on their personal, educational and employment development".

Learning Angle Briefing No. 5: Using Time to Train Rights

This Learning Angle will help ULRs to promote the new rights to request time to train which came into effect in April 2010.
