Constituency Development Plans

The UNISON Labour-Link has 67 Constituency Development Plans, not all in areas with Labour MPs. The agreement spells out the financial contribution made by the trade union (currently a grant of £1,500 per annum), and defines clearly the purposes for which the money should be spent. Twice-yearly reports are expected from the constituency detailing what has been done, and a development plan for the area can be jointly agreed.

There are clear benefits for local UNISON branches Ð joint activities and campaigning can bring local elected representatives and UNISON members together. UNISON branches can help set the agenda for the local party, in both campaigning and policy terms, so having a significant influence.

The local party gets a better understanding of trade union issues and can encourage trade union membership. An effective Constituency Development Plan can be an important tool to revitalise UNISON Labour-Link activity at local level - to the benefit of both local UNISON branches and Constituency Labour Parties.
