Branch and regional activities
UNISON is committed to developing our international work at branch and regional level. We are proud of the work that our branches and regions undertake on solidarity links with trade unionists in other countries and raising awareness at home on international issues and events.
Twinning between a UNISON branch or region and a union in another country is a practical way of developing the union's international work through exchanging information and experiences, developing mutual support and improving awareness of each others countries and unions.
The role of the branch international relations officer (BIRO) is to encourage among branch members an awareness of UNISON policy on international matters and an understanding of the importance of international issues to everyone.
Each region may appoint an officer to coordinate the region’s international work, encourage and train branch international officers and work in partnership with its regional international committee.
UNISON responds to requests to speak out when trade unionists and workers are under threat. You can subscribe to receive urgent actions.
Twice yearly international weekend seminar for activist to hear more about international developments and the union's international work
UNISON produces a quarterly newsletter on international issues, updates on current international activities and suggestions on international projects and campaigns in the union. Branches and regions are encouraged to submit articles on international work they are engaged in. Email:

A limited number of grants are available to individual UNISON members undertaking a project, taking part in a study tour, carrying out voluntary work or attending a conference abroad.
