Overseas nurses in the UK
UNISON is committed to ensuring that nurses from overseas working in the UK get the respect and recognition they deserve and are treated equally by employers.
Over the years, there has been a significant increase in the number of nurses working in the UK from overseas. However, this is not without inherent problems. When it comes to overseas nurses experiencing bad practice and discrimination, increasingly more cases are being reported.
UNISON has been the driving force behind campaigns to ensure fair and equitable treatment of overseas nurses in the UK. In some hospitals, overseas nurses make up half of the nursing staff and without them the health service would struggle to run efficiently.
We have offered advice on and protection from some of the bad practice that many nurses find themselves having to deal with and continues to recognise the skills overseas nurses have to offer while being committed to ensuring that overseas nurses in the UK get the best opportunities to develop their skills and contribute effectively in the NHS.
UNISON responded to the consultation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) - the regulatory body for nurses, midwives and health visitors - on the overseas nurses programme for UK registration and we campaign to ensure that both patients and staff are protected. Details on how to register with the NMC can be found on their website
