Health care assistants
UNISON recognises the huge diversity of roles and responsibilities that Healthcare Assistants carry out on a daily basis. HCAs have seen a marked growth in the range of tasks that they are required to perform, many of which are frontline nursing work.
UNISON stands firmly behind any HCA who wishes to progress to do nurse training and we have lobbied the government for a clearer route to secondment, so that HCAs do not have to take a pay cut through a bursary to advance their careers. At the same time we respect and support HCAs who want to carry on in the role that they have carved out within the NHS. In short, we welcome and represent all HCAs regardless of their career intentions or qualifications.
