How we organise
UNISON members working in schools and education departments organise within local government branches. Any workplace issues or problems should be raised with the UNISON representative in the school or department (if there is one) or by contacting the UNISON branch at the local authority.

Most staff working in schools and local authority education departments are on local government pay and conditions. You can get more information on conditions in individual local authorities and schools from your local UNISON branch office.

UNISON works at regional level through regional officers who support branches.

Schools

UNISON is the largest trade union for staff in schools and local authority education departments.

Our members include teaching assistants, nursery staff, administrators, secretaries, policy officers, technicians, cleaners, caretakers, school meals workers - in fact anyone working in schools or supporting education.

UNISON is campaigning to make sure the vital contribution these staff make to schools and education is recognised and rewarded by calling for:

  • Better pay and conditions
  • Improved career structures
  • Access to training and development
  • Fair treatment for term-time, part-time and temporary staff
  • High quality, well-resourced education services accountable to the local community

SSSNB - Update

(15/07/2010)Following the general election, the Independent Chair of the SSSNB received a letter from the Department for Education which stated that the Department was undertaking a review of the School Support Staff Negotiating Body (SSSNB) and support staff pay and conditions. As a result of this SSSNB activities was put on hold. The SSSNB Executive Group met on 13 July. At that meeting, Department for Education officials stated that government Ministers had still not made a decision on the future of the SSSNB. They were asked specifically to provide a written update on which areas, if any, of the SSSNB work programme could continue. The independent chair will be writing to the Secretary of State expressing concern over the delay. UNISON and the other support staff unions have also written to the Secretary of State asking for an urgent meeting to discuss this. To date we have not received a reply.

Fighting Academies Bill

(01/06/2010)UNISON is completely opposed to the Lib-Con Government’s plans to make it easier for schools to become academies. These plans ride roughshod over local communities, parents and staff. UNISON is working with the TUC and other education unions and the Anti-Academies Alliance to oppose these plans.
