Asbestos in Schools

The Joint Union Asbestos Committee (JUAC)*, a national asbestos trade union campaign group, has backed Asbestos in Schools: the need for action, a report by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Occupational Safety and Health that highlights the level of danger from asbestos in Britains schools.

Asbestos in Schools

(2/06/2011)Every school has a duty to manage its asbestos plan under the Control of Asbestos Regulations which came into force in 2006 (2007 for NI). A head teacher is the duty manager and could be fined or even jailed for breaches of the regulations.

National Survey on Asbestos in Schools

(28/10/2010)UNISON together with the teaching and support staff unions are undertaking a joint survey of asbestos management in schools and this circular provides a link to the on-line questionnaire. UNISON branch and school safety representatives are invited to complete the brief on line questionnaire by 15th November 2010. Please complete the short on-line questionnaire in collaboration with colleagues from the other Unions in your school and make one return only per school. No individual or school will be identified as a result of the survey. The information we gather through this exercise will be used solely to provide statistical evidence for the campaign to ensure the safe management and removal of asbestos from schools.
