Higher education
UNISON is the largest UK trade union for support staff in higher education.
Our 50,000 members include registrars, librarians, personnel, technicians, administrators, clerks, secretaries, cleaners, craftworkers, catering staff, porters and people working in IT, finance and estates management. We work to improve pay, terms and conditions at national, regional and local level. UNISON is campaigning for:
- Equal pay for work of equal value
- Better pay and conditions
- An end to low pay
- Fair and equal treatment for part-time, term-time and temporary staff
- Access to training and career opportunities for all staff
- An end to discrimination in higher education

(09/08/2010)At UNISON’s 2010 national delegate conference the National Executive Council (NEC) put forward a rule change to create a new Universities and Colleges Service Group. This would have brought together members working in Higher Education, Further Education and 6th Form Colleges into a new service group.
(06/08/2010)HE circular HE/27/10 which launches a consultation on the final national pay offer from the employers is being sent out to branch secretaries shortly. This circular includes an explanatory cover note, a members briefing note, a copy of the final offer and a ballot form for the branch secretary to complete and return with the final voting figures. We are asking branch secretaries to circulate the materials to members.
(27/07/2010)UNISON’s 2011 Higher Education Service Group Conference will be held at the Harrogate International Centre, Kings Road, Harrogate on Wednesday 16 February 2011. This has been moved to a slightly earlier time than last year and is adjacent to the Women’s Conference. This move in timetable was not the preferred option of the Higher Education Service Group Executive, but the result of the NEC seeking economies of scale. Branches should note that this creates only a small gap between this year’s Higher Education Branch Seminar and the submission of conference motions, and branches should note this when planning branch meetings to discuss submitting conference motions
(24/06/2010) The next Higher Education branch seminar will be held at the Birmingham Holiday Inn on 21 to 23 October 2010. Please find attached circular HE/18/2010 which contains relevant registrations forms and all details.
UNISON cuts survey reveals where axe will fall in further and higher education on day of protest.
(10/05/2010) We will be holding local joint union protests across the UK in HE and FE - a ‘Day of Dissent’ - on 21 June. We will be working on joint materials with sister unions and are asking branches to think about what sort of event you could organise to protest against the pay offer and redundancies/threats to jobs.
(30/03/2010)At the New JNCHES meeting on 29 March, UCEA made an offer to explore how a non-consolidated cash sum equivalent to 0.25% of pay bill could be applied.
