UNISON is the largest UK trade union for support staff in higher education.
Our 50,000 members include registrars, librarians, personnel, technicians, administrators, clerks, secretaries, cleaners, craftworkers, catering staff, porters and people working in IT, finance and estates management. We work to improve pay, terms and conditions at national, regional and local level.
Shared Services in Higher Education
We would like to alert branches of several shared services initiatives taking place across the UK. David Willetts, the universities and science minister, has called for "back-office" services to be pooled because "too many universities try to do too much in-house".There is mounting evidence that shared services and outsourcing 'solutions' typically fail to live up to their promise and often turn into major headaches. Further information and negotiating advice can be downloaded from this factsheet and circular.Higher Education Campaign Advice Sheets
