National agreementsHealth and SafetyNew Agreement on Bullying and Harassment(01/08/2008) You will find below links to the new National Guidance agreement on Harassment and Bullying in Employment in Further Education Colleges from the joint AoC and Union working party.New Powers to Screen and Search Pupils for Weapons(15/03/2007) As part of the Violent Crime Reduction Act the government is introducing proposals that will allow head teachers and authorised staff to search without consent, pupils whom they suspect are carrying a knife or other weapon. The power comes into force on 31 May 2007 and the DfES is currently undertaking a consultation on the guidance that will accompany the Act. Although this relates to schools it is relevant to the college sector as well.Slips and Trips in Further Education(09/02/2007) This bulletin provides information on a current Health and Safety Executive campaign to reduce the number of slip and trip accidents in schools, colleges, universities and other education settings.Improving Worker Involvement in Health and Safety(29/09/2006) Below is the UNISON response to the HSE consultation on improving worker involvement in health and Safety. UNISON believes that we do not have the right legislation, guidance, nor encouragement.UNISON has concerns that the HSE is seeking to reduce the regulatory burden on employers by moving away from enforcement to guidance. Have You Seen This : Stress(29/09/06)IRS has carried out research among more than 170 employers about trends in stress-related absences and the ways in which they are trying to reduce them. Public sector organisations in the IRS study are more than twice as likely to have a policy on stress. The most common actions taken are: introducing mechanisms enabling workers to raise concerns about workloads or responsibilities; and offering flexible working.New Fire Regulations Advice to Members(16/09/06) The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO) comes into force on October 1st. Please note the new Fire Safety Order does NOT apply to Scotland or Northern Ireland, though similar arrangements may eventually be in place.Young Workers Health and Safety(20/09/06) This year European Health and Safety Week takes place from 23 October 2006 and is dedicated to young people. UNISON will be campaigning and organising around young workers health and safety, and in particular bullying and harassment.Management Standards for Work Related Stress(28/09/06) Work-related stress is a major cause of occupational ill health. That means sickness absence, high staff turnover and poor performance in your organisation. HSE’s Management Standards have been designed to help managers, employees and trade unions representatives manage the issue.Pandemic Flu: Guidance for the Sector(June 06) The DfES have recently published advice and guidance for all parts of the education sector,including FE, in support of emergency planning in the event of Pandemic Flu.Why Health and Safety Matters in Further Education(31/08/06)Workers should not run the risk of being injured, or becoming ill because of their work; but unfortunately this is the daily risk that many face.
