Home care and the minimum wage exposed again

UNISON welcomed the report by the Resolution Foundation this week which once again shone a light on the scale of non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage in home care.

UNISON supports the recommendations made in the report for councils, providers and HMRC (who enforce the minimum wage).

Sampson Low, UNISON head of policy, said “We call upon councils to adopt UNISON’s Ethical Care Charter which would not only ensure that homecare workers are paid for their travel time but that home care standards are increased for the people who rely on this vital public service.

“We also urge the government to not just strengthen the capability of HMRC to address non payment of the minimum wage in homecare but to take bold and decisive action to address the long standing under-funding of the home care sector which is fuelling a social crisis.”
