What issues should concern worker investors?

Several commercial ethical funds, and some fund managers either disinvest, or engage with company management over issues such as:

  • Weapons industry
  • Tobacco industry
  • Child labour
  • Environmental policies
  • Executive pay - especially where senior executives are rewarded for failure, or whether multiples between low-paid workers and executives exceed a certain figure
  • Discrimination of companies on grounds of gender, race, age or sexual orientation
  • Workers representation and conditions

For example, trustees of the TSSA union general fund ask companies to demonstrate their commitment to International Labour Organisation conventions which cover:

  • freedom from discrimination
  • freedom from bonded or forced labour
  • freedom from oppression
  • freedom from dangerous working conditions
  • freedom of association
  • the right to organise and collective bargaining
  • the right to equal remuneration
