UNISON members are contributors to several hundred funded occupational pension schemes.

The value of these funds currently exceeds £100bn and is invested in company shares (equities), commercial and government bonds, property and currency, in the UK and overseas.

At UNISON's 2005 delegate conference it was agreed to develop a programme (Motion 31, 2005) to ensure that investment choices and fund rules were in the best interests of contributors.

This includes:

  • Maximising employee representation on fund boards
  • Offering support and training for UNISON-nominated representatives on fund boards
  • Participating in capital stewardship initiatives by national and international union centres
  • Developing policy initiatives for corporate and social responsibility
