The Big Conversation

Tony Blair writes for UNISON

The prime minister is keen to involve as many people as possible in the Big Conversation - especially UNISON members. Writing exclusively for the union's Link to another page on this siteU magazine Mr Blair says the union's members are "ideally placed" to help the Labour Party come to the right conclusions.

"Your commitment and skills are vital to the improvements we have seen in our public services. You are in the front-line.

"So your experience is invaluable as we discuss how we can provide health care, education and the other public services which are not just universal and of high-quality but also personalised to the needs of the individual.

"The goal of the Big Conversation is simple. It's to ensure we build on the solid foundations we have together put in place over the last six years and to plot the correct course for our country in the decades ahead.

"And we believe the more people we can involve in these discussions and decisions, the better the chance we'll get it right.

"I passionately believe that Britain is a great deal better than it was. Mortgage rates and unemployment are lower than for a generation. The minimum wage, campaigned for so strongly by this union, is tackling poverty pay. There is record investment going into our schools and hospitals. Everyone at last has the right to paid holidays.

"These are just a few of the achievements we have put in place together. Achievements made possible because we have put Labour values into action. But we all know, too, that there is a great deal more to do.

"We will be guided, of course, in all we do by Labour's aims and vision. But we must examine how we can translate them into new and effective action to continue building a future fair for all.

"We need to look again at how, for instance, we can better spread prosperity to all parts of the country, how we can build a criminal justice system which meets the needs of the new century, how we re-awaken interest in the whole political process and how we best tackle terrorism and poverty across the world.

"We want to hear from you about what should be done.

"For while the Tories are returning to the divisive and extreme policies of the past, Labour is determined to continue meeting the priorities, concerns and ambitions of the people who elect us.

"If we are to devise effective and successful policies for the future, we need to involve you - and millions of people like you - to chart our future direction.

"And that's why I hope as many UNISON members will get involved."
