October is Black History Month

Across the UK, UNISON branches, employers and community groups will be celebrating the history of Black people in the workplace by organising workshops and events for Black History Month.

Black History Month is an opportunity to provide information about the perspectives and experiences of Black people, promote multiculturalism, and acknowledge black peoples' contributions to British society and history.

Black History Month 2011

Build a home for Mary

For Black History Month 2011, UNISON is focusing on the Mary Seacole Statue Appeal

Throughout the year, UNISON has been placing a spotlight on the life and achievements of Mary Seacole. They pay tribute not only to past achievements, but to our current challenges as well. The struggles and discrimination faced by Mary in the 1850s continue to be etched into the experiences of nurses today. Despite the achievements of Mary Seacole and millions of Black women workers in the UK, there is no named statue to a Black woman. The Mary Seacole statue appeal aims to put right this continuing historical wrong.
