What do branches need to know?

In July 2006 the NEC reviewed the union's equal pay strategy in the light of the employment tribunal decision in the case of Allen vs GMB. The case concerned allegations of sex discrimination arising out of single status negotiations in Middlesbrough council. The tribunal upheld claims of indirect discrimination and victimisation against the GMB. The GMB has appealed against the decision and this will be heard in January 2007.

The NEC restated UNISON's policy that negotiations, backed up by legal action in appropriate circumstances, was the best way to achieve fair and equal pay for all our members.

The NEC issued interim advice to all branches designed to secure the best outcome for members, pending a more detailed review. It agreed that in the meantime no pay and grading review should be put out to consultation with members, or signed before it has been considered by the regional office and the relevant head office service group.

The first stage of that review has now been completed and a number of procedures are being introduced. These are set out in the following documents, full copies of which are available below.

Negotiating strategy and guidance for local representatives

This will assist local representatives who are in the process of negotiating for the introduction of new pay and grading structures and sets out UNISON's strategy toward such negotiations and gives guidance on the critical issues that must be addressed.
