This week’s unemployment figures are likely to show there is yet more gloom for families in the UK.
Every job lost is a personal tragedy, and experts are predicting that the dole queues may swell to three million by the end of the year. We know that women and young people are being hit especially hard – this is a disgrace.
The evidence just keeps on mounting, proving over and over again that the government has got it wrong on the recession and wrong on recovery.
Cuts are clearly not the cure. We need urgent action to get the UK working, and to get our economy moving again.
At every possible opportunity, I will be making the case for an alternative rescue plan that includes making taxation fairer and taking action on the banks and on tax avoidance rather than drastic cuts to public spending and public services.
